Getting Started

Set up your sewing machine on a stable, well-lit table.

  1. Power Connection: Plug the power cord into the machine and then into a wall outlet. Turn the power switch to "I".

Stitch Selection & Settings

Use the stitch selection dial to choose your stitch. Adjust settings for fabric and project.

Stitch Selection Dial: Turn to the symbol or number of your desired stitch (e.g., straight stitch, zigzag, blind hem).

Stitch Length Dial: Controls the distance between stitches. Higher numbers for longer stitches (basting), lower for shorter stitches (fine fabrics). Set to "0" to drop feed dogs.

Reverse Sewing Lever: Press and hold to sew in reverse for reinforcement.

Presser Foot Pressure Dial: Adjust for thick (higher pressure) or thin (lower pressure) fabrics.

Thread Tension Dial: Normally set to "4". Adjust if stitches are looping (decrease tension) or puckering (increase tension).

Basic Sewing Techniques

Follow these steps for successful sewing.

  1. Raise the presser foot lever and place fabric under the foot, aligning edge with desired seam guide.
  2. Lower the presser foot lever.
  3. Hold both thread tails lightly toward the back for the first few stitches.
  4. Gently press the foot controller to start sewing. Guide fabric gently; do not push or pull.
  5. At the end of the seam, press the reverse lever to sew a few stitches backward, then release.
  6. Raise the presser foot and pull the fabric toward the back to remove. Cut threads with the thread cutter.

Tip: Practice on scrap fabric first to test stitch length, tension, and fabric handling.

Making a Buttonhole

The Brother L14 creates buttonholes in four easy steps.

  1. Mark Buttonhole: Mark the buttonhole position and length on the fabric.
  2. Attach Buttonhole Foot: Snap on the buttonhole foot. Place the button in the holder on the foot to automatically set the size.
  3. Set Machine: Turn stitch selection dial to the buttonhole symbol (often Step 1). Set stitch length and width as recommended.
  4. Sew the Buttonhole:
    • Step 1: Sew the left side of the buttonhole.
    • Step 2: Turn dial to next setting. Sew the bottom bar tack.
    • Step 3: Turn dial. Sew the right side of the buttonhole.
    • Step 4: Turn dial. Sew the top bar tack.
  5. Remove fabric and carefully cut open the buttonhole with a seam ripper.

WARNING! Always use the buttonhole foot. Practice on a scrap of the same fabric first.

Maintenance & Cleaning

Regular care ensures smooth operation and longevity.

  1. Unplug the Machine: Always disconnect power before maintenance.
  2. Cleaning the Bobbin Area: Remove the needle plate screw and needle plate. Use the small brush to remove lint and thread bits from the bobbin case and feed dogs.
  3. Oiling: Apply 1-2 drops of sewing machine oil to moving parts as indicated in the manual (e.g., hook race) every few months or after extensive use. Wipe away excess oil.
  4. Needle Replacement: Replace bent or dull needles immediately. Loosen needle clamp screw, remove old needle, insert new needle with flat side toward the back, tighten screw.
  5. Cover: Use the dust cover when not in use.

CAUTION! Use only sewing machine oil. Do not use household oils. Never spray cleaners directly into the machine.
