Unpacking and Setup

Unpack and inspect all contents. Place on stable, flat surface.

  1. Remove machine from box: Lift machine by its handle, not by accessories.
  2. Attach power cord: Plug into machine and then into 120V AC outlet.
  3. Connect foot pedal: Plug into machine port.
  4. Install needle: Loosen needle clamp screw, insert needle with flat side to back, tighten.
  5. Wind bobbin: Place thread on spool pin, guide through bobbin winding tension, press foot pedal.
  6. Insert bobbin: Drop bobbin into case with thread running counterclockwise.

First-Time Operation

Stitch Selection and Settings

  3. Adjust stitch length: Press length button, use +/- to set (shorter for finer fabrics).
  4. Adjust stitch width: Press width button, use +/- to set (wider for zigzag or decorative).

Threading and Bobbin

Bobbin Winding and Insertion:

  1. Place empty bobbin on bobbin winder shaft.
  2. Guide thread from spool through bobbin winding tension disk.
  3. Press bobbin winder shaft to engage, press foot pedal to wind.
  4. Insert bobbin into drop-in case with thread running counterclockwise.
  5. Pull thread through slit, under tension spring.

WARNING! Ensure bobbin is correctly inserted to prevent jams. Use Brother recommended bobbins (Class 15).

Maintenance and Cleaning

Unplug machine before maintenance. Regular cleaning prevents lint buildup.

  1. Remove needle plate: Use screwdriver to loosen screws, lift plate.
  2. Clean feed dogs and bobbin area: Use small brush to remove lint and threads.
  3. Oil sparingly: Only if specified in manual; use sewing machine oil.
  4. Replace needle regularly: Dull or bent needles cause poor stitching.
  5. Cover machine when not in use to prevent dust accumulation.

CAUTION! Do not use compressed air; it can force lint into machine. Never oil without checking manual first.
