Familiarize yourself with the main controls located on the front and right side of the machine.

Front Panel: Stitch Selector Dial, Stitch Length Dial, Stitch Width Dial, Reverse Sewing Lever, Presser Foot Lifter, Handwheel.

Operation: Use the dials to select and adjust your stitch. The reverse lever is held down to sew backwards. The handwheel manually raises/lowers the needle. The power/light switch is on the right side.

Presser Feet: The machine comes with a Zigzag Foot (on machine), Buttonhole Foot, Zipper Foot, and Blind Hem Foot. Snap on and off using the lever at the back of the foot holder.

Basic Sewing

Follow these steps to begin a basic sewing project.

  1. Raise the presser foot and place fabric under it, aligning the edge with a seam guide.
  2. Lower the presser foot lever.
  3. Gently press the foot pedal to start sewing. Control speed with pedal pressure.
  4. Guide the fabric gently with your hands; do not push or pull.
  5. To finish, press the reverse lever to sew a few stitches backwards, then release.
  6. Raise the needle to its highest position, then raise the presser foot and remove the fabric.
  7. Cut threads using the thread cutter on the back of the presser foot holder.

Tip: Practice on scrap fabric first to get a feel for the speed and fabric guidance.

Stitch Selection

Use the stitch selector dial to choose from the available patterns.

  1. Refer to the stitch chart printed on the machine or in the manual.
  2. Turn the stitch selector dial to the desired pattern number.
  3. For straight stitch, also select the needle position (Left, Center, Right).
  4. Adjust the stitch length (short for basting, long for topstitching) and width (for zigzag and decorative stitches).
  5. For buttonholes, attach the buttonhole foot, select the buttonhole stitch, and follow the markings on the foot.

WARNING! Ensure the needle is in the highest position before changing the stitch pattern or presser foot.

Maintenance

Regular cleaning and oiling ensure smooth operation and longevity.

  1. Cleaning: Unplug the machine. Use the small brush to remove lint from the bobbin area, feed dogs, and tension discs.
  2. Oiling: Apply one drop of sewing machine oil to the designated points (see manual) every few months or after extensive use.
  3. Needle Replacement: Turn handwheel to raise needle. Loosen needle clamp screw, remove old needle, insert new one with flat side to the back, and tighten screw.
  4. Bulb Replacement: Unplug machine. Unscrew the light cover, replace the LED bulb, and reattach the cover.

CAUTION! Always unplug the machine before performing any maintenance. Use only Brother-recommended needles and oil.
