Installation & Setup

Unpack and inspect contents. Place on stable, flat surface.

  1. Attach wide table: Slide onto free arm until it clicks into place.
  2. Install foot pedal: Plug into machine’s foot control jack.
  3. Connect power: Plug power cord into machine and wall outlet.
  4. Install needle: Loosen needle clamp screw, insert needle with flat side to back, tighten.
  5. Wind bobbin: Follow bobbin winding instructions in section 8.

WARNING! Keep fingers away from needle area during setup. Ensure machine is unplugged when installing needle.

First-Time Operation

Power on machine; follow basic steps to begin sewing.

  1. Thread machine: Use automatic needle threader or manual threading path.
  2. Insert bobbin: Place bobbin in drop-in compartment with thread unwinding counterclockwise.
  3. Select stitch: Use stitch selection dial or buttons to choose desired stitch.
  4. Adjust settings: Set stitch length, width, and tension as needed.
  5. Begin sewing: Place fabric under presser foot, lower foot, and press foot pedal.

CAUTION! Always lower presser foot before sewing. Keep hands clear of moving needle.

Controls and Settings

Access functions via control panel. Main Panel: Power switch, Stitch selection dial/buttons, Start/stop button, Reverse stitch button, Needle up/down button.

Digital Display: Shows stitch number, length, width, and recommended foot.

Stitch Length: Adjustable from 0-5mm. Stitch Width: Adjustable from 0-7mm. Tension: Dial for upper thread tension (default 4). Speed Control: Slider to limit maximum sewing speed. Needle Position: Button to move needle left/center/right.

Stitch Selection & Functions

Select from 60 stitches including straight, zigzag, decorative, and quilting stitches.

  1. Turn stitch selection dial or press +/- buttons to choose stitch.
  2. Consult stitch chart on machine for recommended settings.
  3. For buttonholes: Select buttonhole stitch, place fabric under foot, press buttonhole lever down, and start sewing—machine completes automatically.
  4. Use reverse stitch button to reinforce beginning and end of seams.
  5. Engage needle up/down button to stop needle in fabric for pivoting.

Tip: Practice on scrap fabric to test stitch settings before starting project.

Threading & Bobbin Winding

Supports standard sewing thread and bobbins.

  1. Upper threading: Follow numbered path on machine; use automatic needle threader by pushing lever down.
  2. Bobbin winding: Place spool on pin, thread through guide, wrap around bobbin, press foot pedal to wind.
  3. Insert bobbin: Drop bobbin into compartment with thread unwinding counterclockwise; pull thread under tension spring.
  4. Draw up bobbin thread: Hold upper thread, turn handwheel toward you to bring bobbin thread up through needle plate.

WARNING! Ensure bobbin is correctly inserted to avoid jams. Use only Brother bobbins (part code SA156).

Maintenance & Cleaning

Unplug before cleaning. Remove needle plate to clean lint from bobbin area.

  1. Clean feed dogs and bobbin area with brush provided.
  2. Oil sparingly as per manual instructions (only specified points).
  3. Replace needle regularly (every 8-10 hours of sewing).
  4. Use dry cloth to clean exterior; no liquids or aerosols.

CAUTION! Do not oil unless specified. Excessive oil can damage machine.

Safety Information

Always unplug when not in use, during maintenance, or when changing needle. Keep fingers away from needle and moving parts. Use proper needle for fabric type. Do not pull fabric while sewing—let feed dogs move it.
